TASTE Spring 2023

| EXPLORE LOW-SUGAR WINES |

Generally, table wines from the Old World made in classic styles will be dry. Italian Pinot Grigio, Chablis from France, and Italian reds such as Chianti, Barolo and Barbaresco are all usually bone dry. But you can certainly find a wide range of other wines that will be technically quite dry, including Malbecs from Argentina, Australian Chardonnays, top-shelf Californian Cabernet Sauvignon and many more. In fact, one of the best-selling New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs—Kim Crawford—is bone dry with a mere 2 grams per litre of sugar, making it a solid code zero (00). Of course, moderation also helps reduce sugar intake. One 5 oz (140 ml) glass of your favourite red that falls in the “semi-dry” or 02 category, could still fit in your plan. You might be able to accommodate that ½ tsp (2.5 g) of sugar. But two 9 oz (270 ml) pours, would add up to about 2 tsp (10 g) of sugar. Your choice. So, bookmark bcliquorstores.com and make it your go-to shopping resource. To get you started, here’s a list of six widely available, good-value wines in a wide range of styles. Every one of these wines clocks less than 5 grams per litre of sugar. And they’re all delicious.
