Coulter & Kristina’s Six Ways to Switch Up Your Margarita
GO NATURAL Fresh lime juice is sweeter than store-bought. By using freshly squeezed juice, you’ll need less sugar to balance your drink. Likewise, agave syrup is a natural sweetener with a fuller flavour. You’ll need less than if you’re using simple syrup.
GET FANCY For an extra-swanky Cadillac margarita with richer flavours, use a premium reposado like La Gritona. And for a layered look, finish by slow pouring Grand Marnier over the back of a spoon to float the liqueur on top.
PLAY WITH PIÑA Slice a peeled pineapple into thin rings and chargrill both sides. Blend with fresh pineapple juice and strain. The extra-fruity sweetness from the juice can replace your sweetener, and the charred smokiness is perfect with mezcal.
SPICE IT UP Chargrill your jalapeños to release their sugars before soaking them for 24 hours. For the best spice-to-spirit ratio and elevated jalapeño flavour, use three peppers for a full bottle of spirit.
TRIM THE RIM To rim your glass, use a mix of equal parts salt and Tajín seasoning. This popular Mexican blend of mild chilies, sea salt and lime adds a zesty piquant seasoning to your drink for a satisfying punch.
SWITCHEROO For a twist on the classic and an elevated smoky fruitiness, replace the tequila with mezcal in your favourite margarita. Or, for a funky blue-hued cocktail, use blue curaçao in place of your orange liqueur, such as Grand Marnier or Cointreau.
