BC SUMMER WINE ADVENTURE

Summerland
SCENIC ROUTE Begin your loop in Summerland against the backdrop of Giant’s Head Mountain. Look up to make out the ancient volcano’s face-like profile, or hike to the top for a 360-degree view. Note the silty Naramata bluffs across Okanagan Lake, the former lake bottom of Glacial Lake Penticton. From the summit, you might hear the whistle of the Kettle Valley Steam Railway, a restored steam train that offers a variety of wine and other themed trips. WINE TOUR Summerland has three distinct wine-growing areas: the lakefront with vineyards and sandy beaches, the morning sun-soaked terraces around Giant’s Head, and the Prairie and Garnet Valleys tucked up in the hills behind town. The moderate climate is known for its success with the Pinot family (Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris), as well as Gewürztraminer and Chardonnay. Don’t miss visiting Haywire, to learn about their signature concrete fermenters, and make time to stop for superb artisan pizza on the patio at Dirty Laundry.
2
Okanagan Falls SCENIC ROUTE
Drive the 40-minute scenic route to Okanagan Falls through Penticton and along winding Eastside Road to take in Skaha Lake. If you’re not tasting wines, the sandy beaches at each end make great swimming spots. WINE TOUR Most of the vineyards and wineries of Okanagan Falls are southeast of town in the rolling hills. This area is known for kettle holes, which formed when blocks of ice fell off a glacier and became partially or entirely buried, then left behind small holes when the ice melted. Look for a jumbled mix of sudden mounds and depressions in the vineyard. Seventy-five percent of the vineyards in this moderate climate are made up of three grapes: Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Chardonnay. Sample limited-production wines at Wild Goose, known for Pinot Gris and Riesling. Stag’s Hollow is a dab hand with not just Pinot Gris but also interesting varieties like Dolcetto and Tempranillo, grown on an unusual double trellising system, and if you look west of the town, high atop Hawthorne Mountain, you can see the steep vineyards of See Ya Later Ranch.

Oliver SCENIC ROUTE
Heading south along Highway 97, watch for bighorn sheep in the hills around Vaseux Lake. You can’t miss n ʕ aylintn (McIntyre Bluff), a large ridge with a narrow opening where an ice dam formed 8,000 to 12,000 years ago. This dam held back the waters of Glacial Lake Penticton, which covered the silty Naramata bluffs. Eventually the dam melted, creating a spectacular spillage of water and soils that now grow the South Okanagan’s grapes. WINE TOUR (& MORE!) Oliver has vineyards on both sides of the north-south valley and produces nearly half of BC’s wine grapes. The areas on the east slopes bask in the scorching afternoon sun; the slightly cooler sites on the west side are known as the Golden Mile. Bartier Bros. are well worth a visit for elegant, fresh Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Syrah. And be sure to stop in for wine tastings and local, farm-fresh lunch at the District Wine Village, a cluster of 13 wineries, a brewery, a distillery and a vineyard.
4
Osoyoos SCENIC ROUTE
A visit to the Nk ' Mip Desert Cultural Centre is a great way to learn about the region and the Syilx Okanagan Nation. From Osoyoos Lake, Canada’s warmest freshwater lake, head west on the Crowsnest Highway (Highway 3) to the Similkameen Valley. About 15 minutes out of town, stop at naturally formed kɬlilx ’ ʷ (Spotted Lake), a traditional medicine lake with hundreds of circles of concentrated minerals. WINE TOUR Oliver’s vineyards merge seamlessly into those of Osoyoos and the large plantings along Black Sage Road. These west- facing vineyards, with deep sandy soils deposited when the ice dam burst, are often the hottest sites in Canada. This area is true desert. Roll down your windows and inhale the smell of sage, an aroma often detected in the region’s rich, full-bodied red wines. Sample some of these bold, flavourful, award-winning wines at Nk ' Mip Cellars, the first Indigenous-owned winery in North America.

Similkameen Valley SCENIC ROUTE
Descending into the Similkameen Valley can give a somewhat haunting feeling among the steep, rocky, windy and seemingly unforgiving terroir. The grape-growing part of the valley follows the Similkameen River from Cawston northwest to Keremeos. Drive the scenic Barcello/Upper Bench Road for great views of the region’s vineyards and orchards. Why not stay overnight in a winery guest suite and visit the many farm markets in the area too? WINE TOUR The dry, sunny, windy conditions make the Similkameen ideal for organic production, and it supports the highest concentration of certified organic farms in Canada. Similkameen wines are known for their stony, graphite-like minerality. Since a wide range of grape varieties grow well in this area, it’s a great place to try everything from crisp whites, bubbles and rosés to cider, fruit wines and robust reds. Stop and savour elegant, ageable Bordeaux varietal blends at the artisanal Clos du Soleil Winery.
6
Naramata SCENIC ROUTE
Continuing north, Highway 3A takes you up into the mountains and past Yellow Lake, popular for fishing, before descending again into the Okanagan Valley. Look out for wild horses grazing on the high mountain plains. Continue north on Highway 97 past Kaleden (and its historic hotel) and Penticton (watch for people basking on colourful floaties in the channel), then head up the east side of Okanagan Lake along winding Naramata Road and its rolling vineyards on benches overlooking the lake. WINE TOUR The long late afternoon and evening sun allows a wide range of grape varieties to ripen, and the gently sloped vineyards and proximity to the lake extend the growing season and help avoid frosts. Merlot, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir dominate the plantings at the more than 40 wineries here. For a taste of Naramata, visit the tranquil Red Rooster tasting room and try the Pinot 3, a unique white co-ferment of Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Pinot Blanc.

La Cervecería Astilleros Tasting Room
A TASTE OF MEXICO IN BC Astilleros means “shipyard,” and the original Shipyards Brewery opened in North Vancouver’s Shipyards Brewery District in late 2020, with the intent to bring “colourful, rich Mexican culture…in the form of delicious craft beers.” A second location opened in Chinatown in 2024. Mexican beers are known for their crisp, refreshing taste and light flavours—typically pale, clean lagers with little bitterness and low alcohol. While his excitement for brewing in general shines The bright-blue-and-white Mexican tile patterns on the beer labels offer the first sign that La Cervecería Astilleros is up to something a little different. So does the name: this is the only cervecería , or Mexican-inspired brewery, in British Columbia (BC).

through, head brewer Dave Van Allen admits his favourite beer to make (and drink) is lager. As he explains, “There is something about making a lager of any kind—there is nothing you can hide behind; it shows all the flaws if it’s not done right.” EMBRACING CREATIVITY Van Allen didn’t start his brewing career with formal training, but he was fortunate to work under some original BC craft brewers, who helped foster his passion for brewing. “The craft beer industry is one of those unique industries where we all help each other out and are all friends, and I’m really stoked on that aspect,” he says. “Those OG brewers pushed me to work my way up in this competitive industry and become a brewmaster.” After more than a decade at Steamworks, Granville Island and finally Russell Brewing, he was keen to return to his creative roots. At La Cervecería Astilleros, his bold, flavoured beers made with Mexican ingredients, like Salted Lime Lager and La Paloma Grapefruit Lager, do just that and consistently win industry awards. SALUD TO SUMMER The brewery plans to continue making thirst-quenching and fruity lagers to pair with tacos and other Mexican-focused dishes. They also have other plans. “We’re going to be releasing some new barrel-aged beers,” says Van Allen, “which will be the first of many!” For summer, he suggests his grapefruit lager: “It’s a great patio beer, nice and light and crisp, but it has that slight grapefruit bitterness that pairs well with anything spicy. I’m a big fan of using it in a marinade for shrimp and chicken—it’s great for grilling and in tacos.” Salud to summer!
“I have so many unique Spanish and Mexican
flavours to work with that keep me excited. I’m always looking for that next style or ingredient that makes me say ‘Now this is a vibe!’”
La Cervecería Astilleros La Rosada Grapefruit Lager $15.99 BC Craft 343304 4 × 473 ml Built on a crisp, light, Mexican-style lager base, La Paloma adds fresh grapefruit zest and flaked salt to amp up the fun and refreshment.

Introducing “Crafted in BC” Wines This summer, you’ll see a new section on wine lists and in BCLIQUOR stores. “Crafted in BC” wines are made by British Columbia (BC) wineries using premium out-of-province grapes. Look on the label to find out where the grapes come from. These wines maintain the same high standards of craft and quality we’ve come to expect from BC-grown wines. Why is BCLIQUOR taking this step? Several consecutive days of −20 C temperatures in the Okanagan-Similkameen region in January 2024 severely damaged or destroyed as much as 15 percent of grapevines. As a result, 90 percent of grape production for the 2024 vintage was lost. To support producers in the region through this challenging vintage, BCLIQUOR is selling Crafted in BC wines. Every BC wine has a story, and the 2024 vintage is one to tell! Both Crafted in BC wines and BC Vintners Quality Alliance (BC VQA) wines will be sold in BCLIQUOR stores this season. BC VQA wines remain 100 percent BC grown and produced. Wineries in the coastal regions of Vancouver Island, Gulf Islands and Fraser Valley, as well as some interior regions, were not as affected by the deep freeze and were able to make wines with BC-grown grapes in 2024. Older BC VQA vintages are also available from wineries across the province. You can read more in the Wines of BC 2024 Vintage Report online. As wineries replant and return to using 100 percent BC-grown grapes, the Crafted in BC positioning will be phased out. Until then, whether you choose Crafted in BC or BC VQA wines, you’re supporting local wineries and their communities and helping ensure the sustainability and resilience of the BC wine industry. Cheers to that!

SAUVIGNON BLANC THE ZESTY PLAYMAKER A great barbecue needs freshness, and BC Sauvignon Blanc delivers. Often grown in cooler pockets of the Okanagan and Similkameen Valleys, these wines burst with citrus, gooseberry and crisp green apple. Their naturally high acidity slices through the richness of grilled salmon, prawn skewers and zesty marinades, while herbaceous notes bring out the best in chimichurri and garden- fresh salads. Some versions lean towards vibrant lime and grapefruit, while others highlight mineral-driven elegance. Either way, this zippy white is a slam dunk for bright, summery flavours.
UNOAKED CHARDONNAY THE CLEANUP HITTER Unoaked Chardonnay is a game changer for barbecue season. Without the influence of oak, its crisp acidity and pure fruit flavours shine, offering bright notes of apple, pear and citrus that refresh between bites. This style enhances the smoky char of grilled chicken, pork tenderloin and veggie kebabs, bringing a clean, vibrant contrast to rich marinades and spice rubs. With a subtle minerality and a fresh, zippy finish, unoaked Chardonnay keeps the focus on the food, making it an effortlessly delicious pairing for any backyard feast.
SHIRAZ/SYRAH THE POWER FORWARD BC Shiraz (sometimes labelled Syrah) is a natural fit for barbecue, packing bold blackberry, black pepper and smoky spice flavours. Grown in warmer South Okanagan and Similkameen sites, these wines balance ripe dark fruit with earthy depth, making them ideal for spice- rubbed ribs, grilled lamb chops or charred sausages. The best versions have velvety tannins and a long, smoky finish, mirroring the seared, caramelized edges of barbecued meats. Whether you lean towards a bolder, fruit-forward style (Shiraz) or a more restrained, savoury expression (Syrah), this grape is a powerhouse on grilling nights.

Bursting with juicy plum, blackberry and a hint of mocha, this easy-going red pairs beautifully with flame-grilled burgers, smoky sausages and sticky ribs. Featuring Agave Spirits with Coulter Noronha & Kristina Silvester from Cuchillo Interest in agave spirits is on the rise, and Cuchillo, marked only by a purple neon skull above its Powell Street entrance, is one of Vancouver’s most popular destinations for Latin American dining. It also boasts one of the largest selections of agave spirits and authentic Latin American cocktails in British Columbia. We sat down with cocktail creator Coulter Noronha and lead bartender Kristina Silvester who have witnessed a growing curiosity around both tequila and mezcal, two widely available distilled spirits made from the agave plant, during their time at Cuchillo. Both bartenders have an encyclopedic knowledge of their wares and are passionate about educating guests on the drinks’ Latin America roots. “It’s important to showcase mezcal and tequila in their purest forms while using the highest-quality cocktail ingredients to make them shine,” Silvester says. Noronha adds, “It’s rewarding to be able to give someone a one-of-a-kind experience with an agave-based spirit or cocktail and share with them the story behind its production, or the creation of that cocktail and why different combinations of flavours work so well together.”

spirits versus mass-produced versions that are sometimes artificially flavoured.” “People are becoming more conscious of the ingredients in their food and in their cocktails,” he adds, “and the difference those ingredients can make—not only to the experience of consuming them, but also to how you feel after.” Noronha also admits to seeing a switch from using blanco tequilas in margaritas, to reposados, which are sweeter and more mature, resulting in a more sophisticated cocktail. YOU’VE PROVIDED SOME SIGNATURE COCKTAILS. WHAT FOODS WOULD YOU RECOMMEND PAIRING WITH THEM? With the Flamin’ Mezcal Margarita, Silvester recommends tacos. Specifically, Cuchillo’s Queso Saganaki taco with pico de gallo, because the ancho smokiness in the cocktail helps balance the richness and salinity of the saganaki cheese. In a pinch when entertaining, she likes to serve mezcal with almost any kind of salty snack. The Classic Margarita, she says, goes with anything from cornbread and mole sauces to traditional Mexican street corn called elotes. Noronha feels the mango in the Flamin’ Mezcal Margarita complements Cuchillo’s Lois Lake Steelhead Trout ceviche with ponzu, mint and basil. “All the fresh ingredients in the drink, combined with a sharp lime and Tajín rim, are a perfect partner for this dish,” he asserts. the methods used to produce it—there are different ways of cooking the agave, extracting it and fermenting it, which make it quite singular.” WHAT TRENDS ARE YOU SEEING IN THE INDUSTRY WHEN IT COMES TO AGAVE SPIRITS? “From what I’ve seen,” notes Noronha, “a lot more people are increasingly able to taste smaller nuances in their cocktails; they can more easily distinguish a great spirit from a good one. There are also a lot more people curious about agave spirits and the differences between small batch, more sustainably produced
CAN YOU TELL US WHAT MAKES AGAVE SPIRITS UNIQUE?
“Agave spirits are very complex—they’re almost like wine. There are many different varieties, and that alone makes them unique,” Silvester notes. “They’re nice to sip on their own or mixed in a cocktail. I never get bored with them. And whenever someone says they don’t like tequila or mezcal, I tell them they haven’t tried the right one yet.” “I’m noticing a lot more people who already love tequila seeking out mezcal,” Noronha chimes in. “Personally, I think mezcal is a bit more interesting. Bartenders’ Choice: Cuchillo’s Top Three Agave Picks
Los Siete Misterios Doba-Yej Mezcal
La Gritona Reposado Tequila
El Tequileño Reposado Tequila This 100 percent agave spirit is our well tequila at Cuchillo. It has no preservatives and is aged three months in oak, which gives it a vanilla and light oaky caramel character. There’s a slight citrus note too, which pairs so well with freshly squeezed lime. It also carries a sweet earthiness in the mouth.
Another of our bar’s well spirits, this mezcal isn’t overly smoky, like some people expect; it’s quite a mild smoke that lingers on the finish. This artisanal mezcal is naturally fermented without additives and distilled in copper stills rather than the clay pots most other brands use. Its appealing pineapple fruitiness alongside fresh-cut grass is highlighted by spicy, peppery flavours. There’s also a leathery undertone.
We appreciate this reposado because it’s made by a woman-owned and -run distillery in Jalisco and comes in a recycled-glass bottle. This tequila is aged eight months in oak, and while the barrels are older and don’t impart a lot of flavour, they do add character. And with zero additives, you end up with pure sweet agave flavours with a delicate vegetal undertone. It also has a clean and smooth profile.
