Insider Picks for Holiday Hosting

BY DAENNA VAN MULLIGEN

Inspired suggestions for wine pairings over the holidays are always appreciated, and who better to offer guidance than the very folks who create the wines? Six of British Columbia’s top winemakers offer their tips on which wines to serve at holiday get-togethers, along with a little advice on their favourite food pairings and why these wines make awesome host and hostess gifts. Here, in their own words, are their preferred picks.

Winemaker’s EDGE

“As one of Canada’s most iconic Cabernet- and Merlot-dominated red blends, Nota Bene brings a sense of occasion to any holiday gathering. For me, a potluck dinner sitting around a table with friends or family while sipping Nota Bene is a joyous thing. I’d bring lamb ragu. “Expressive wild raspberry, cassis, cherry, baking spice and sagebrush notes lead to a palate of black fruit flavours, and suave tannins frame the finish. It’s a timeless wine that can be cellared for a decade.” “Our Merlot-dominated Meritage blend is crafted with approachability and gifting in mind. It’s a food-friendly red with softer tannins, which make it a great choice to pair with a rich, cheesy lasagna after a day of outdoor winter adventures, or serve alongside a charcuterie board and a lively board game shared with good friends. “This red delivers plenty of dark fruit and hints of clove and vanilla on the nose. Smooth and medium- to full-bodied with a lengthy finish, it also suggests chocolate on the palate.” “The festive Odyssey Brut adds that perfect celebratory sparkle to any gathering. As a gift, it feels thoughtful and elicits joy; it’s something people don’t always buy for themselves. It also brings brightness and elegance to the holiday table and pairs wonderfully with roast turkey and citrus herb stuffing or creamy gratins. “A versatile sparkling wine, it opens with lively aromas of green apple, lemon zest and white peach and is layered with hints of brioche. It’s dry and vibrant, with persistent bubbles and refreshing acidity.”

WINEMAKER’S EDGE

“Red Icon is a Merlot- and Cabernet-dominated red Bordeaux-style blend, and our most gifted wine every holiday season thanks to its consistency year after year and its reputation as one of BC’s top red wines. One of my favourite winter dishes is braised short ribs and roasted root vegetables, and the rich, tender beef complements our Red Icon. “Ripe dark fruit and chocolate aromas are followed by a silky palate, which is brimming with cassis, blackberries and hints of peppery spices and cured meats.” “Our Quails’ Gate Meritage is a balanced and rich Cabernet Franc- and Merlot-dominated blend. I find it perfect as a hostess gift or to serve by the fire après-ski; it really is an ideal choice for any winter gathering. A versatile red, it pairs nicely with an herb-crusted rack of lamb, osso buco or a vegetarian holiday roast served with mushroom gravy. “Our Meritage boasts aromas of plum and cassis, cedar, baking spices and dark chocolate. Medium-bodied and savoury, it is framed with notable structure.” “An irresistibly festive sparkling wine, our Charme de l’île Rosé adds elegance to any winter gathering, inspiring a toast the moment it is opened. Animated bubbles and bright acidity complement a variety of foods, from smoked salmon blinis and goat’s cheese crostini to baked ham glazed in maple and mustard. “Our rosé’s eye-catching pale-pink hue with wild strawberry, raspberry, rose petal and citrus aromas, lively dry palate and refreshing finish make it a welcome gift for any holiday occasion.”

Give the gift of a hug with Share-a-Bear, BCLIQUOR’s winter holiday tradition. A teddy bear is timeless. Soft, comforting and always ready with a hug, these companions can make even the hardest of days a little brighter. Every holiday season, for three and a half decades, BCLIQUOR stores have been providing that simple magic to British Columbians through the Share-a-Bear program.

Bringing Comfort & Joy

Launched in 1989, the Share-a-Bear program has become a tradition in November and December. Customers at BCL stores can purchase a plush bear, and with every purchase, an identical bear is donated to a local charity or community organization. One bear goes home with the customer, and its twin goes out into the community, where it might land in the arms of a child in hospital or with a family facing crisis during the holidays. For people receiving a bear, it is more than just a stuffed toy; it’s a symbol of compassion, community care and the generosity of strangers. Over the years, these bears have provided comfort in every corner of the province.

The bears themselves may be small, but their ripple effect is enormous.

16

Building Community Connection Share-a-Bear is just one initiative of the Multiply the Good program and is a shining example of how businesses and communities can work together. What makes Share-a-Bear so special is its simplicity. Buying a bear at a local BCLIQUOR store makes it easy for everyday British Columbians to embody the spirit of giving and have a positive social impact in their local community—often for someone they will never meet. “This is our way of giving back to the communities we serve throughout the province,” says Blain Lawson, chief executive officer and general manager of the BC Liquor Distribution Branch. “Share-a-Bear is one of our most successful community involvement initiatives … and BCLIQUOR store staff and customers have been very supportive of the program. Bringing smiles to children and families in need over the holidays is truly rewarding.”

THE BEAR FACTS

In 2025, BCLIQUOR stores across the province will have more than 29,000 bears available between November 19 and December 31. This year, when you spot the in-store Share-a-Bear display, fill in a ballot for a chance to win a giant teddy bear. Then, buy your own regular-sized bear at the till for $19.95 (+tax), and BCL will donate its twin. As the holiday season approaches, the sight of all those huggable bears lined up in BCL stores serves as a reminder that generosity doesn’t have to be grand to be impactful. Give the gift of comfort and kindness this holiday season.

Multiply the Good is the BC Liquor Distribution Branch’s commitment to corporate social responsibility. Beyond the $1 billion we contribute to vital public services as a branch of the provincial government, the program’s four pillars give back to communities, protect the environment, and engage our people and partners. Multiply the Good creates a shared vision for how our staff, customers and industry partners can work together to make a difference for British Columbians.

DID YOU KNOW?

• Share-a-Bear has been a holiday tradition in BCL stores for more than 35 years. • Over 700,000 bears have been donated since 1989, spreading comfort and kindness province-wide. • The campaign runs for seven weeks every November and December. • For every bear purchased, a twin bear is donated locally—to hospitals, shelters, first responders and community groups.

Level Up Your Gift Exchange Turn the familiar gift-swap format into a fabulous bottle exchange using these innovative tips.

BY CHARLENE ROOKE

26

What’s the hottest item at any gift exchange? A bottle of something to savour or splash over the holidays! It’s consumable, shareable and always in the seasonal spirit. Whether your friend, colleague or family group draws names from a gifting pool or strategizes swapping like it’s a sport, make the beloved holiday tradition a modern bottles-only gift exchange this season. A bottle exchange can work for every budget, entertaining style and group. It’s a great icebreaker for unfamiliar and diverse groups, yet it can also allow for deeper personalization when the gifters are well acquainted. Ready, set, gift!

Gift Exchange 101

• Decide on the exchange style. Will you hold a “white elephant” swap, with gift- picking order chosen by draw? (Or perhaps by score in a holiday trivia game conducted before the exchange?) Or will you choose an orderly “secret Santa” exchange by drawing names in advance? Will gifts be wrapped or unwrapped? Can participants nab a previously picked, in-demand gift from another guest? • Determine the number of participants. As host, consider having an extra little gift or two, or additional wrapping and packaging, on hand for last-minute levelling up. • Establish a budget range that’s comfortable for your group.

• Ask about allergies or sensitivities (including anyone who might prefer de-alcoholized or lower-alcohol products) so gifts are appropriate for everyone. • Consider applying a theme. A “favourite things” swap of beloved bottles, drinks related to holiday movies and music or even gifts themed around travel destinations or places—all invite creativity to the party. • Specify wrapping or packaging guidelines. Draw from the inspiration found within our trio of gift-exchange variations to suggest value-added personal touches, add-on gifts or customized gift kits or packages.

27

bcliquorstores.com

Elevating the familiar gift exchange doesn’t have to mean splashing out on expensive items and elaborate packaging. This exchange relies on drinks everyone loves that stand on their own and packaging that draws on personal touches and seasonal inspiration. Whether the recipient is an old friend or family member or a random draw pairs you with a potential new pal, consider copying an old holiday photo. Turn that photo into a funny card or gift tag, creating an immediate connection. LEVEL 1 Laid-Back Exchange

How to Level Up: Cheap & Cheerful Inspiration

• Create festive low- or no-cost packaging by tucking sprigs of seasonal greenery or fragrant herbs into a ribbon or bow. • Consider rustic wrappings, such as brown paper or burlap tied with twine or plaid ribbon. • Upcycle a clean, wooly winter sock or sweater sleeve into a charming bottle cozy.

PAIRING UP

PERSONAL TOUCHES

Hand-write a food-pairing idea, a favourite family recipe or wine and cocktail serving ideas on the card or gift tag for your bottle of choice. Consider adding a seasonal moment to enjoy sipping the gift, such as “For all your holiday moments,” “To cozy up after ice

Turn seasonal sips into holiday memories by creating a context for enjoyment. Accompany the bottle with a favourite holiday film recommendation or a list of must-see seasonal TV specials to stream. Curate a playlist of songs your recipient can enjoy as a soundtrack to sipping holiday cheer. Share your annual seasonal recommendations for outdoor winter walks or urban

Leftfield Sauvignon Blanc $19.99 New Zealand 168498 Bottega Il Vino dei Poeti Prosecco Brut $19.99 Italy 95711

strolls for viewing holiday lights and sparkle, creating occasions for post- outing sipping.

skating” or “To ‘Cheers’ in your New Year!”

28

LEVEL UP YOUR GIFT EXCHANGE

For gifters with ingenuity and expertise to share, exchanging bottles with an add-on or handmade gift takes the potential for enjoyment to the next level. Bakers, crafters and holiday shoppers will love curating the little extras that make their bottles extra- covetable at a gift exchange. Create multi- sensory gifts that evoke a holiday feeling or moment; presents can even be curated around a seasonal colour, scent or theme, from evergreen forest or cozy cabin to all things gold and glitter or red and green. LEVEL 2 Next-Level Exchange

How to Level Up: Get Creative & Crafty

• Source a holiday tea towel or napkin in seasonal shades. Roll a bottle like a burrito, or tie off both ends like a holiday cracker. • Use festive fabric to “dress” a bottle. Think plaid or buffalo check, or faux fur, sequins or glitter. Purchase, crochet or knit bottle hats, scarves or sweaters. • Decorate the bottle like a holiday tree:

layer tinsel, garland and tiny lights on a green-wrapped bottle, with any add-on gifts as ornaments.

Curate a superior sipping experience with little additions that enhance the ritual of pouring a drink. Spirits and liqueurs coupled with a mug, a coaster and coffee pods or tea bags set a cozy scene. Mulling spices and a heatproof glass or mug turn wine or cider into a holiday tradition. You could even craft or purchase fireplace-safe fragrance bombs or fire starters that crackle with seasonal ambience. MAKE MOMENTS INTO MEMORIES

EDIBLE INCREDIBLE ADD-ONS

Imagine presenting a gift to someone special that they would rarely, if ever, purchase for themselves. As they tear off the gift wrap, revealing an exceptional wine, spirit or Champagne, you see you’ve just made their holiday season—and yours too. For those who appreciate life’s little luxuries, here are some great gifting ideas.

When choosing the ultimate gift bottle, it truly is what’s inside that counts.

All That Glitters Is Gold

What started in a historic Lithuanian distillery using winter rye and Baltic water distilled in small-batch copper stills has resulted in a top-shelf vodka. Royal Dragon Imperial Vodka, a Canadian-owned brand since 2024, is distilled five times and charcoal filtered, then poured into glass bottles hand-sculpted with the brand’s signature dragon. The super-luxe touch? This smooth-drinking vodka is infused with 23-carat gold leaf from Switzerland, which glitters in the glass whether served on the rocks or swirling in a special cocktail. And speaking of gold, this vodka won double gold at the 2024 Wine & Spirits Wholesalers of America Wine & Spirits Tasting Competition.

Chameleon Cuvée

Séverine Frerson, Maison Perrier-Jouët’s cellar master, describes Perrier-Jouët Grand Brut Champagne as a chameleon cuvée: “It has the substance and personality to adapt to any situation, from an aperitif to a main course.” This sophisticated Brut Champagne, classically made from Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, offers delicate floral notes, crisp pear and apple, and hints of biscuit. It is a thoughtfully selected bubble to ring in the New Year, and considering this Champagne dates back to 1846, that’s a lot of New Year’s Eve toasting by many. CLASSIC OR NOTHING

PLEASE ENJOY RESPONSIBLY.

The New Martini TINY, TALL & TASTY Classic martinis meet bold twists, giving a new generation endless ways to sip in style. THE MARTINI METHOD:

BY REECE SIMS

The martini has always carried an air of elegance. Shaken or stirred, it was the drink of choice for silver screen icons and cocktail purists. But in 2026, it’s no longer just a tuxedoed relic from mid-century bars. The next generation of martini makers is rewriting the rules, embracing playful twists, unexpected flavours and more accessible formats. Bartenders and home enthusiasts alike are mixing martinis with the same curiosity once reserved for tiki drinks or craft beer, but without sacrificing the drink’s sleek allure. These five trends are shaping how the martini will be sipped, shared and styled in the year ahead.

45

bcliquorstores.com

Mini Martinis

“A little martini goes a long way.”

Small in size but big in style, mini martinis (or tiny ’tinis) are perfect for those who want the martini experience without committing to a full pour. Usually just an ounce or so, these petite serves allow you to explore multiple styles in one sitting, turning the martini into a tasting experience. High-end bars are serving flights of minis, pairing different spirits and garnishes for a curated progression. At home, they’re a host’s dream: easy to batch, fun to customize and perfect for letting guests try several styles without overpouring.

Dirty & Daring Martinis

Forget the polite olive brine. Today’s martini drinkers are getting creative with savoury and tangy twists, from pickle juice to kimchi brine. Social media has helped this trend explode: there’s something irresistible about the visual drama of a murky glass and the salty, punchy payoff. Vodkas like Luksusowa’s potato-based spirit provide a creamy backdrop for bold brines, while Citadelle Gin’s bright citrus notes cut through richer, saltier serves for a cleaner, more balanced finish. The beauty of this style? It’s endlessly customizable. From smoked olives to caper berry brine, dirty martinis are proving salty is the new sophisticated.

“Tall, refreshing and perfectly stretched for leisurely sipping.”

Martini Highballs

Martinis are officially breaking out of the coupe and going long. Think dirty martinis stretched with soda, espresso martinis topped with tonic or citrus- forward builds that blur the line between aperitif and anytime sipper. Served over ice in a tall glass with a mixer, these highballs are more sessionable takes, perfect for long lunches or after-work gatherings. Lighter, more delicate vodkas and gins work best: Finlandia Vodka’s barley-driven crispness, Grey Goose Vodka’s soft wheat profile and Sheringham Beacon Gin’s floral character each bring a refined polish that pairs beautifully with vermouth, tonic, soda or other creative mixers in this format.

“The dirtier the better, with brines that make the classic olive look tame.”
