| HOLIDAY BAR ESSENTIALS |
Liqueurs and vermouths are modifiers that work well in cocktails, or even sipped as they are. On top of what you need for your menu, perhaps add orange, peppermint, coffee, chocolate or a cream liqueur for seasonal flair. Bitters will season a cocktail and give it complexity. Add some juices, mixes and sparkling water to extend your options. Finally, don’t forget the garnishes, like citrus slices, fresh fruit, artisanal cherries and olives, plus, seasonal herbs and holiday warming spices for visual appeal, aroma and flavour. Other Considerations Not everyone is into cocktails, so have red, white and sparkling wine on hand, along with a selection of beer (mix packs are perfect). Make sure that water and alcohol-free options are also part of your overall plan. Tools An ice bucket and tongs, corkscrew with bottle opener, cutting board and knife, jigger, strainer, cocktail shaker, mixing glass and stirring spoon will all come in handy when making cocktails. Use a chopstick if you don’t want to purchase a bar spoon. For glassware, include mugs for warm drinks, wine glasses and a selection of cocktail glasses to suit your menu. Chill Out Make sure you have more fresh ice than you think you will need. Please don’t use the ice that’s been in your freezer forever; it smells and tastes bad, and no one is excited about heading out to buy more ice during a party. You’re not opening a cocktail bar, so you can either keep your holiday bar simple or splurge on the seemingly endless options— it’s up to you and your wallet. Remember to drink responsibly and ensure your guests have a safe way to get home if they’ve been drinking. Enjoy your holiday celebrations!
