Remember those spring showers? They were a boon to clay and limestone soils, which are prominent on the Right Bank of Bordeaux. Unmistakable stars from this region in 2020 include red wines from Castillon, Francs and Fronsac that particularly benefited from these growing conditions and are known to be price-friendly. On the Left Bank, the heat-ripened Cabernets have intense concentration and promising structure. Pauillac and St. Julien are particularly noteworthy in the 2020 vintage. The Whites Despite the warm and prolonged dry spells, the fact that the heat wasn’t oppressive helped the fruit retain its acidity. The resulting white wines are ripe with abundant flavour concentration, crisp and refreshing. Thankfully, the whites in the 2020 vintage were a little less terroir-specific than the reds, so you can find exceptional dry white wines from across Bordeaux. The Sweets Bordeaux’s sweet wines are made from grapes affected with botrytis, or noble rot. With low yields of botrytis-affected grapes, these prized wines from Sauternes and Barsac are limited in the 2020 vintage, so get them before they sell out.
