Taste Fall 2024

Get Autumn Cozy

BY CHARLENE ROOKE

British Columbia (BC) is a province blessed by nature, with fields, forests, farms and waters that yield incredible harvests. There’s no better time than autumn to celebrate that bounty, and to greet the cooler days ahead with cozy made-in-BC drinks. From smooth red and white wines to hearty fall beers and spiced ciders, plus spiced sips of spirits and liqueurs, these drinks are ideal for creating moments around the fireplace or bonfire or in the backyard. Best yet, when you pour something local, you celebrate the farmers, makers and entrepreneurs who bring their craft to the autumn table.

Colourful Autumn Wines Our taste for the bright, crisp white wines of summer mellow in autumn to welcome aromatic, lively and off-dry whites, wines that are wonderful with savoury pastas and soups. Wild Goose Vineyards in Okanagan Falls excels with aromatic grapes such as the Gewürztraminer, Riesling and Pinot Blanc in its Autumn Gold, with a whiff of rose bushes, flavours of tropical fruit and honey and balancing hints of sweetness and citrus. As summer’s heat fades, velvety Merlot, spicy Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc are red grapes that taste just right. Road 13 Honest John’s Red blends them with fruity Gamay and Pinot Noir. With breezy vanilla and wildflowers on the nose and flavours of cherry and berries, this wine’s spicy pepper and clove plus soft tannins will match well with grilled foods.
