Spirits that do Good
BY CHARLENE ROOKE
On April 22, the international holiday Earth Day marks its 55 th year of generating global awareness for environmental protection. Celebrate with a toast of a spirit made with sustainability, green energy, fair trade, animal welfare and other earth-friendly practices in mind. If you’d like to look behind the labels to line up a home bar of bottles made by companies that strive to do good in the world, here are some great places to start. Vodka from the Source Absolut takes pride that the well water and wheat that go into its vodka come only from southern Sweden, where it’s located. More than 400 farm suppliers in the region practice sustainable agriculture through traditional techniques like crop rotation for soil health. After vodka production, the used grain contains no alcohol but is full of nutrients, so it becomes feed for livestock farms. Absolut’s energy- efficient distillery is considered carbon-neutral through an extensive tree-planting initiative that offsets emissions from its operations. Finally, the Absolut bottle, as crystal-clear as the crisp, clean-finishing vodka it holds, is made with at least 53 percent recycled glass.
Crisp-tasting vodka with a clean, soft finish.
